Using Anthony Browne's Literature in Bilingual Classrooms

Drawing from a study with primarily Latin American descent students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, Ortega will discuss how young immigrant students develop their skills as readers and writers and formulate understandings of the underlying themes across literature. Ortega will highlight the challenges and values of integrating Anthony Browne’s books in bilingual classrooms as a pedagogical strategy that places the students in an active position committed to their own cultural experiences and funds of knowledge. 

Speaker:

Manuel Ortega has worked in several areas of education as a Technical Pedagogical Advisor and elementary teacher in Mexico and the United States.  Ortega has a Master’s degree in Education and a specialization in teaching Mexican history. He is finishing his doctoral degree in Education, with an anticipated completion in January 2024. He is a dual-language bilingual elementary teacher at the Multicultural Learning Center in Canoga Park, CA.
