Writing and Rewriting Tang Literati Lives: Portraits of Writers in the Old and New Tang Histories

Anna Shields (EAS) is a professor of Chinese literature in the Dept. of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, and she specializes in the literary history of the Tang, Five Dynasties, and Northern Song eras. Her interests lie at the intersection of social, cultural and literary change in the period of the Tang-Song transition. She has published two books: One Who Knows Me: Friendship and Literary Culture in Mid-Tang China (Harvard, 2015) and Crafting a Collection: The Cultural Contexts and Poetic Practice of the Collection from among the Flowers (Huajian ji) (Harvard, 2006), in addition to articles and book chapters on late medieval literature. She joined the Princeton faculty this July from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she was Associate Professor of Chinese and former Director of the Honors College. Before that, she was Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Arizona, and also a visiting professor at Princeton University and the University of Michigan. Her Ph.D. is from Indiana University and her M.A. from Harvard University. She is currently working on a new book project that examines Five Dynasties and Northern Song scholars’ interpretations of the Tang literary legacy.
