Join us for a panel discussion with UCLA undergraduate students and faculty exploring cultural exchange in higher education and the workforce. Hear from panelists about their experiences studying, working, and living abroad. How has their international education impacted them personally and professionally? Did they find their norms challenged and how was it to discover another culture’s norms? This panel is a must-attend for any student interested in navigating cultural differences around the world and learning about the role of intercultural communication in addressing the challenges of foreign exchange. Join us to learn how you too can experience meaningful intercultural interactions on campus and around the world. Bring your questions to our live Q&A.

This event is part of International Education Week, an initiative at UCLA spearheaded by the International Institute to celebrate and foster dialogue about international education on campus.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Justin Chen is a third year pre-law student at UCLA from Auckland, NZ and Taipei, TW pursuing a major in Political Science and a minor in Entrepreneurship at UCLA Anderson. He has interned at PwC Legal, Eminent Venture Capital, and LCS & Partners and hopes to specialize in M&A, private equity, and cross border investments within corporate law.

Wudia Kamara (she/her/hers) is a third year double majoring in Economics and Pre-International Development Studies. She participated in the Global Internship Program this past Summer, where she had the opportunity to virtually intern as a Business Development Intern at Agilis Advisors, an advisory company in Berlin, Germany.

Adnan Shabib is a third-year Mathematics of Computation and Economics double major at UCLA. Having attended international schools in Bahrain and Jordan, Adnan has been exposed to many different cultures. Currently working at the International Student Representative Office, and serving as the International Student Ambassador for Bahrain, Adnan is excited to be a part of UCLA's International Education Week!

Shalom Staub is the Director of the UCLA Center for Community Learning. He has been involved in collaborative, community-engaged program development, pedagogy and research over his multi-sector 37 year professional career in state government, the private non-profit sector, and higher education. Shalom developed and now teaches a new online course on Intercultural Communication for the Global Workplace available to students participating in the new summer Global Internships program. Prior to arriving to Los Angeles, Staub was Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Civic Engagement at Dickinson College, and the founding President/CEO of the Institute for Cultural Partnerships, a non-profit organization located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Staub received his BA and MA in Anthropology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Folklore and Folklife from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a practitioner certification in conflict mediation and as a conflict resolution educator.

With special guest Natalia Garcia Tang, the 2021-22 International Student Representative on the UCLA Undergraduate Students Association Council.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Shannon Courtney is a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Political Science and double minoring in Spanish and Global Studies. Her academic experiences in foreign countries sparked her passion for foreign diplomacy and learning more about global languages and cultures. At UCLA, Shannon is involved in the USAC student government, the Bruin Political Union, the Roosevelt Institute, and TEDxUCLA. After graduation, Shannon’s professional aspiration is to attend graduate school and work for the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer, particularly in Latin America. Shannon participated in the Virtual Global Internship Program at UCLA during the summer of 2021 in Bogotá, Colombia with the organization Somos CaPAZes.

Student Voices is a student-led discussion series that provides smaller spaces to engage with experts and fellow students on issues spanning international relations. Each event is organized by the Burkle Center interns in partnership with an international relations organization on campus.
